PRACTICAL DETAILS ABOUT MANCHESTER & UNITED KINGDOM

Time Zone
Manchester, UK operates British Summer Time (BST) after March 26 which is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).

Electricity
In the United Kingdom the standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. The power plugs and sockets are of type G.

Unless you are from a country using G type plugs, please do not forget to bring your adapter to Manchester.

Climate
The current weather forecast for Manchester during the week of the meeting is a daily high temperature of 13-15°C (55-59°F) and overnight lows of 5-8°C (41-46°F).
This is above average for the time of year. However, the weather can be changeable and light rain showers are forecast most days.
We therefore recommend you bring light layers and waterproof jacket, as well as an umbrella.

Currency & Exchange
The official currency of the United Kingdom is the pound sterling, known as the pound (£, GBP). Each pound is divided into 100 pence (100p = £1).

Credit & Debit Cards: The safest and easiest form of money is credit cards. Major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa and American Express) are accepted in the majority of restaurants/cafes/bars, facilities and transport links (taxi, bus, tram and train).

Cash Withdrawal: It is possible to withdraw pounds directly from any ATM in Manchester. This is also the cheapest option, since it has a lower exchange rate. However, it is important to keep in mind that your own bank may charge you a fee each time you use a foreign ATM.

The most common banknotes are £5, £10 and £20.
£50 notes are in circulation, but should be avoided as they are not always accepted.
The coins in circulation are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 and £2.

You can change money at the following places:
• any bank office
• exchange offices in the airport and within the city
• major hotels
• withdrawal from ATMs

Tipping: Tipping is normally optional in the UK. It is customary to leave 10 to 15% of the bill as tip when eating out; however, some restaurants add on a service charge instead (this must be clearly stated e.g. on the menu), in which case you do not need to leave a tip as well. When using taxi’s it is common to round the fare to the nearest GBP.

Emergency Phone Numbers
As with the rest of the United Kingdom, please call the below emergency numbers in the case of any emergency:
Police : 999
Fire : 999
Ambulance: 999
